Slow Burner

Marlene
Would light this smoke
After every repentless clatter of bone.

To spill
Its philistine gray
All over my waning, ashen soul.

Like
The silence of synagogue
And the squeamish faith in love;

Soon,
She’d be all but gone-
A ride without handlebars
Onto a bitter, chartreuse carousel.
